White Papers:

White Papers should not be thinly disguised sales literature. The sell is there, but it is understated - it's implicit. The main objective is to inform the reader about new developments in which he/she is interested; these are usually developments that will impact or might impact on their company's activities. These papers work well when the business case is not clear to the reader; thus, white papers perform an educational task. If the reader is convinced two things happen: one, he/she feels well disposed towards the company that helped them understand an important development; and two, they are likely to put that company at the top of their shopping list when they start the evaluation process.
